Art Cauadro Popotillo Chico
Hundreds of fine popotillo reeds radiate outward from a golden sunburst center, forming a mandala-like medallion of extraordinary geometric precision against a deep black background. This is the ancient Mexican folk art of popotillo — a pre-Columbian craft tradition in which artisans hand-lay dried reed grass, straw by straw, to build intricate mosaic compositions without the use of paint. Housed in a substantial ebonized shadow-box frame, the natural golden tones of the reeds glow against the dark field, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. A one-of-a-kind artisan piece, it carries the patience and skill of a tradition practiced for centuries in the workshops of Mexico and brings an unmistakable handcrafted authenticity to any wall in Scottsdale and beyond.
