Acanthus leaves unfurl from each of the five arms of this French Rococo bronze candelabra, the castwork growing more elaborate as the eye travels from the fluted column down to the asymmetrical base embossed with floral bouquets and shell motifs. Dating to approximately 1840–1870, it reflects the height of the Second Empire period, when decorative bronze casting reached an extraordinary standard of detail and artistry in France. The aged patina — dark at the scrollwork, brighter at the raised relief — is the honest record of more than 150 years of history. At home on a Spanish Colonial sideboard, a formal European antique dining table, or a richly appointed Scottsdale interior, it casts five candles' worth of candlelight with unmistakable presence.
